Right-to-Work Verification Guide

All UK employers must check that every employee has the right to work in the UK before they start work. Failure to comply can result in fines of up to £45,000 per illegal worker.

You must see the original documents from List A or List B. These include passports, biometric residence permits, and other Home Office documents.

Verify the document is genuine, belongs to the person presenting it, and allows them to do the type of work you're offering.

Make a clear copy of the relevant pages and store them securely. Record the date of the check.

For employees with time-limited permission to work, schedule follow-up checks before their documents expire.
